Mafiosos, this thing of ours 🤌🏾 – this middle-aged life – is many things. And I love it. It’s a good time. What I don’t love is the perpetual urge I have to finish up my meals with “something sweet” and how much harder those empty calories hit these days. 🤦🏾♀️ I love sweets, but my affair with sugar has kept me in a vicious cycle of having to ‘unbig’ my back every few years and it’s harder than ever to keep the extra pounds off. The struggle is real. But all hope is not lost. I started adding herbal tea to my daily routine and several have helped curb my sugar cravings. So it’s only right that I share the “tea” (see what I did there? 😏) with you. Here they are, without further ado, my top 5 herbal teas to help tame your sweet tooth:
Moroccan Mint Tea
Moroccan Mint tea is really refreshing. The natural sweetness of mint can trick your taste buds into thinking you’re getting a sugary treat, while keeping calories to a minimum. Not everyone is into the taste of mint, so if this isn’t an option for you, keep reading. I’ve got a few more you can try. Everyone else: Buy here.
Cinnamon Tea
Cinnamon is known for its ability to regulate blood sugar levels. The naturally sweet and spicy flavor is satisfying and though you can certainly add a little lemon to it, I drink it as is and it’s delicious! Buy here.
Ginger Tea
Ginger tea has a robust, spicy flavor and works triple duty, not only to curb sugar cravings but also to aid in digestion and reduce inflammation. Ginger is one of my staple teas, and I always keep some in my pantry. Buy here.
Licorice Root Tea
Licorice root tea has a naturally sweet flavor and contains compounds that can help regulate blood sugar levels. Buy here.
Rooibos Tea
Rooibos tea, also known as red tea, is naturally sweet and packed with antioxidants. It’s caffeine-free and can help reduce stress, which is often a trigger for sugar cravings. Win-win. Buy here.
Get Your Sip On
The next time you’re tempted to reach for that cookie or slice of cake, brew yourself a cup of one of these teas instead. It may not work for you every time, but every small effort helps to make sustainable changes that lead to a happier, healthier you. Until next time, cheers to living your best life one sip at a time. ☕ (And put those damn cookies down! 😩)
