04 Feb The Creative Comeback: How to Start Again After a Pause

Dear Creatives,
Once upon a time, you were doing your thing. Operating in your gift. Sharing it with the world passionately and relentlessly. You were in your element, and whew, it was a time. And then… you went quiet.
Maybe you burned out. Maybe life got loud. Maybe the thrill wore off. Maybe you started to feel like you were tossing your talent into the void and wondered, would anybody even miss it if I stopped? Whatever the reason, you disappeared. But over time, you felt it. That nudge. That pull back toward the thing you do best. (Callings have a way of refusing to be forgotten.) And now you’re finally ready to start creating again.
Right on cue, here comes the spiral:
Am I still good?
Does anybody even want to see/hear what I have to offer?
What if nobody likes it?
What if I make a fool of myself?
I was on a roll before… how do I even begin again?
Creatives are sensitive souls. That’s not a weakness, that’s part of the profile. But I can tell you one thing with certainty: once an artist, always an artist. And while you may be dreaming of a comeback that would make Cher blush, it’s really not that serious. All you have to do is do.
Here are 4 ways to start again after a pause without turning it into a whole dramatic production.
You’ve decided you’re returning. Cool. But return to what, exactly?
Ask yourself:
- What do I want my work to say now?
- Am I creating something new, or releasing what I’ve been sitting on?
- What’s different about me since I last shared?
- What does “success” look like to me now: consistency, joy, visibility, money, connection?
Your comeback doesn’t have to have a specific look. You’re allowed to edit the blueprint.
Plan like someone who learned the hard way.
You burned out before, so let’s not recreate the conditions.
Make a schedule you can actually stick to:
- One post a week
- Two songs a month
- One sketch every Sunday
- Thirty minutes a day, three days a week
You are in total control of how much and how often you share. You don’t have to flood the internet to be legitimate. You just have to be present.
Skip the big announcement.
I know. You want to kick the door in like, “HEY WORLD, I’M BACK!”
But you don’t owe the timeline a press release. Quietly reactivate the channels. Start posting. Show up consistently. The people who are meant to find you will notice. (And the algorithm will too, because it’s nosy like that.). Let your work do the talking. It’s fluent.
Find your people.
There’s power in community, especially for creatives.
Find people who:
- inspire you (without triggering comparison paralysis)
- keep you accountable
- remind you you’re not crazy for caring this much
- encourage you to do the thing
Your gift was never meant to live in a vacuum.
One Last Thought from the Veranda
It’s easy to copy someone else’s blueprint and ride a wave to notoriety. It takes courage to offer what you have to give as it is — untouched and uninfluenced by what’s popular. But the thing is, whatever you do, nobody can do it like you. That’s the entire point. So if you’ve been thinking about jumping back in, this is your sign. The world is waiting on your comeback.
Now tell me: what are you returning to, and what’s the smallest “I’m back” action you can take this week?
